The first Strides to Thrive Walk was held in 2009, to support Jewish Foundation for Group Homes, one of the country's leading disability support organizations. Hundreds of walkers have helped to raise money for the Gary and Annette Henkin Activities Fund, connecting disabled adults with events and programs in our area.
Today, JFGH has grown to 23 homes and support for more than 180 disabled individuals living in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. The mission of JFGH is to increase the independence, dignity, choice and community inclusion of adults with disabilities, through both homes and work programs. The Strides to Thrive/Henkin Activities Fund supports a wide offering of activities in JFGH residential homes, to provide disabled adults with a more active lifestyle.
To help, consider donating to the Activiites Fund or volunteering to connect residents with activities - and each other. With your support, disabled adults will continue to thrive.
How has the Fund helped?
Over the last two years, support from our event has funded swimming club memberships, swim lessons, laughing yoga classes, exercise equipment instruction, and personal training. A new walking program has given residents an opportunity to get out and about. The program has increased overall physical activity for group home residents, and provided opportunities for fun and socialization.
